End of another season!

Our cricket season has ended abruptly 2 weeks ahead of schedule. Over years of neglect the pitch has deteriorated to an extent that it has become dangerous on a couple of occasions this season. After much deliberation, we at the club committee, have decided that this important work must commence immediately and hence the games were cancelled for the last two weekends of the season to enable the repair work to start- which incidentally has not started until October!
As it happens, when such important financial decisions are to be made, individuals start valuing their ideas much more than what they are worth and start defending their corners vigorously resulting inevitably in personality and ego clashes. Added to this some drastic poor communication and arrogant self importance and one gets the recipe for much deliberation and time wasting! I am learning a lot about the workings of the human mind in the committee dealings than in the NHS!
My final umpiring assessment went well and I am expecting sign off by this month end. One of the criticisms was that I don’t move very fast, which is an understatement, given my size! And the other is that I am ball watching rather than observing the over all picture. This is a hard thing to do for me as some one who is still playing and I do sometimes admire a fantastic shot or a superb fielding and forget to get into the right position to judge run out etc. I will improve as I umpire more in the coming seasons, I hope. Incidentally I have been advised to umpire in a higher league which tests my loyalty to this league. I will have to slowly wriggle out.
The last game I played this season was for an orthopaedic team which was played to fairly mediocre standards. Last year I remember playing a much more competitive game and hence I took my friend Mohan with me, but he did get to bowl and took wickets so it is not that bad after all. I did score some runs though and it is better to finish the season this way than a couple of run outs!

Went to Madrid on a short holiday (picture above).Viggy is progressing slowly but steadily in his scoring correspondence course. I am planning to attend the umpires meet in October at Lord’s where I am hoping to get tested against the Hawkeye in a workshop.
The weather has turned grey and gloomy with liberal sprinkling from time to time. Last few days have been pretty miserable and I will have to look for ways to avoid the gloom.
